Volley

volleys tend to be played from low-to-high, with depth and placement. In so doing, players provide themselves the opportunity to move in and play a second volley closer to the net, thereby enhancing their chances of winning the point. This tactical pattern is underused by many players and yet it remains a very effective ploy on both slow and fast courts as well as on important points.

Being able to half volley effectively and consistently requires extensive practice. And this practice is becoming more important in the modern game, where the power and spin of groundstrokes (including passing shots) sees an increasing number of players playing half volleys as they make their way to the net. Allowing players to continue to move forward and play an offensive volley with their next shot is a characteristic of well-played half volleys.

Shots like the drive volley lie. a topspin groundstroke hit on the full of the mid-court) and the backhand smash (I.e. like the regular smash but played over the backhand side) can help developing players achieve their tactical approach/net play goals and should thus be introduced as appropriate.
